Forum: democracy_now_vid Subject: Experimental DN! BitTorrent DivX files

Hi archive.org users,

We are experimenting with offering 700 MB DivX files daily by BitTorrent. This is not yet officially announced, but since some users on this forum have asked in the past for such things, it'd be great if you could help us beta test.

To get the .torrent files, see http://ewheel.democracynow.org/

If things are working right, new torrent files should be posted a bit after 10:30am (US Eastern time) daily. The most recent three shows are kept available and seeded by us.

Some helpful information: http://www.democracynow.org/bittorrent_help.shtml -- any feedback on this would be much appreciated.

Enjoy!

wow, you guys rule! this is great!

your BT guide is great. you tell people though that the guidling for keeping the client open is a 1:1 upload/download ratio. if you want to offer your users a BitTorrent support forum (to help with firewall settings etc.), you can point them to the one at chomskytorrents.org if you want to (soon to change it's name to progressivetorrents.org, probably)

are you planning on getting lower quality versions on bittorrent, too? i don't know if you'll get a big swarm going daily on the 700 MB file. how about a 200 - 300 MB DivX?

can i start distributing these files to other BT index sites? after three days - do you just stop the server-side seeding, or stop tracking the torrent, too?

when are you planning to offer the links on the main page? (i'm really looking forward to hearing amy say "...and we are now seeding our show on BitTorrent" :)

There are no current plans to offer torrents in any formats other than the 700MB DivX. Perhaps this will change in the future, but for now it seems most efficient only to offer one format. If you'd like a smaller file, or a bigger one, you can get it here at archive.org.

Fine with me if you want to put the .torrent files on other sites. We stop seeding after three days and we stop making the .torrent files available, but we do not currently do anything to the tracker. This is all brand new for DN!, obviously, and so subject to change.

There is currently a link in the right-hand column of our website to our "ewheel" site. We will increase promotion of this slowly as we become more convinced that this is actually working.

Could you make the files available for longer than three days? I missed a lot of them. I seed stuff for a very long time normally, a lot more than 3 days, and a lot higher than 100%.

I tend to agree w/ c-command. 700MB is enough space for encoding a 2hr movie w/ divx. It takes over 2hrs to download the show, it would be nice if that time was shorter.

I would at least consider trying encoding at a lower bitrate (say 1/mbs) and seeing if it makes a difference in quality. I would be surprised if there was a big one.

I'm excited to see the downloads via bittorrent, you guys should consider doing some publicity, you're definitely breaking ground.

I downloaded these files, but as one can see from the filenames, they are mp4 files, not divx. They are also not 700 megabytes. The original post was a bit misleading. Maybe you would like to remedy it?

i see you've made up your minds on the size of the files...still, wouldn't it make sense to choose the filesize that's most popular among BT downloaders? for most shows that are available on BT and that people tend download on a daily basis are about 1/2 - 2/3 of the video bitrate you're offering now (just telling from my own experience)...

anyway, i'll try and organise people to distribute the .torrents to torrentsites, to help make them self-sustaining (and thus make your experiment a success!)...

the torrent for August 17 seems to be doing pretty well, i uploaded the .torrent to:

chomskytorrents.org
liberaltorrents.org
mininova.org
torrentportal.com
torrentreactor.com
torrentspy.com
livetorrents.com

say, do you have access to the stats for completed downloads (many tracker sites show those stats alongside the number of seeds and leechers). that way i could evaluate the effect of uploading activities better...

Hey come on guys 700MB for 1hour is way too much for anyone to download every day! Please consider compressing it to around 250MB which would be an ideal size for torrents...

This seems to be the consensus, I suggest you guys ask for a vote on size and format and do what people want the most. Thanks for listening to my voice.

that's what i've been saying.

only the absolute broadband-elite can afford a daily download of 700MB. the regular BT user may download a movie of that size every now and then...the typical size for a show of that length that you download on a daily basis, is about half of that. consider the releases of jon stewart's daily show - the torrents come at 170MB for a 25min show. peak at 1000+ peers.

you could even consider posting a 700MB and an 200-300MB torrent - the traffic you've got now wouldn't devide up between the two, you would gain a lot of peers that can't afford the 700MB download but still prefer to the webstream a file they can store and share ...
